Kodachadri & Kavaledurga: Back-to-Back Treks & The Hidlumane Falls Flush | Chapter 162 (Nov 1-4, 2018)

Kodachadri landscape trek

Place: Kodachadri & Kavaledurga Trek
Distance: 400 x 2 = 800kms
Directions: Bangalore > Hiryur > Shimoga > Nagara Fort > Kodachadri > Kavaledurga
Krew: Aditya (Adi) > Ashok (momz) > Aravind (Arvi) > Karthik (Sp)
Car: Creta
Previous Visit: BR Hills

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:

Alright, this was one of those getting back into flow trips. Kodachadri trek in one day (both climbing up & down by foot) basically flushes out you mind and body pretty good. The trek is quite enjoyable with lot of wild life scenes. Then when you back this up with another trek on the next day, you will officially called mental. Haha that we proudly are :P

All 4 days was with zero cell network, so yeah, had to be good!

The Krew at Kodachadri

INTRO & PLAN:

After August 2018, we hadn’t been anywhere in Sept & Oct. Rusty 2018 it was, trust me! 2019 should be different. 2019 will be different. Okay, to get the juices flowing we decided to hit a big one. We did try out a few options in the Western Ghats but these couldn’t materialise. So I began my enquiry into Shimoga side and we finalized on Kodachadri trek.

Having 4-5 home stay options and finally we finalized and were all set to go and BAM came the shocker! I was asked to travel to Amritsar from office and when I broke this down to my friends they said fine some other time. This took me aback, I decided to fight for this trip – was it worth it? Hell Yeah! \m/

TIME: 22:00 (29/10/2018)

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:

Yeah I was up by 4AM did a few sit-ups and push-ups and was all set to go. We met at college at 7AM after formal greetings we were all set to go. The plan was quite simple:

Day1: Go – VV dam+ Nagara Fort, Day2: Kodachadri, Day3: Kavaledurga, Day 4: Come back!

TIME: 07:15

DAY 1: Go to Shimoga!

RIDE 1: (Bangalore–Hiriyur – Shimoga – Nagara - Nittur)

This was a 400kms drive with two places covered on Day1. The first 200kms was butter smooth and 2nd half of the journey was slow paced. We left Bangalore by about 07:30 and the drive was smooth. We pulled over at our regular hotel for some yummy breakfast. Post breakfast we drove non-stop and testing my memory we took the correct turn near Hiryur to reach the beautiful Vanivilas Sagara Dam (200kms)

TIME: 11:00

Vanivilas Sagara Dam stop

After spending some quality time at Vanivilas we left towards Shimoga. The drive was again smooth but slow paced. At hosadurga, we went on foot exporing the town and finally found our Laxmi :P. Driving further at a smooth but steady pace, we pulled over at Shimoga for some Biryani batting. After a heavy lunch we left towards Hosanagara, and we stopped at the Nagara Fort for some exploration.

TIME: 16:45

Exploring Nagara Fort

NAGARA FORT:

Nagara fort would take approximately an hour to cover. It would be better to visit this fort during monsoons as the entire fort would be draped with a green grass blanket. The fort has a few ponds, meeting halls, and outposts. Its quite spacious and easy to climb and hence a good pit-stop on the way to the might Kodachadri!

TIME: 17:30

Continuing further we reached Nittur and eventually made it to Simha Farms.

TIME: 18:00

Simha Farms entrance

SIMHA FARMS:

Trust me, this does require special mention as this was like none of the other home-stays we had visited. As we were proceeding from the gate to the Villa, we saw sculptures of Buffalo's, Snakes, People working in fields and they looked so real and being in their own natural environment made them even more realistic. This kind of spooked us & sobered us down!

Sculptures at Simha Farms

Mr. Aditya is a wild life photographer and his father was an art teacher and these sculptures were his creation. We were truly impressed about the passion these people had. I usually don’t write much about the home stays, but this deserved special credit. Contact details mentioned at the end. (Else u won’t read the whole article, kidding! :P)

The passion for art at the farm

We ventured out to Nittur by 7PM to get few essentials, and there we saw a batch of people in a jeep make a pit-stop. They had just returned from Kodachadri and looked totally busted. They went to a medicine shop and were inquiring for some pain-killers. We inquired as to how the trek was and they to my horror, they gave us the wildest of description. Considering they looked fit and all, this made me worried of the fact that others in our team would be worried. Anyway, we made back to our home stay, opened the bottles and sat around till 1AM speaking.

Special mention to the friendliest kitten I’ve met till date, he jumped on our thighs and ate from our plates. Jumped on our bed and was sleeping on our bed. Haha, crazy fellow!

TIME: 01:00

DAY 2: Kodachadri trekking – The Reckoning day

Waking up at 5AM, I went outside and sat. Next to wake up was Momz. We had some tea and sat in the peaceful ambience. We had our breakfast and decided to leave to kodchadri with a lunch packed and water 4-5 litres of water. The base of the hillock is about 30mins from Simha Farms. We reached the base of the hill, awoke the lizard’s spirit within and were all set for a day of mental & physical flushing.

We took about 3.5hours to climb up and about 2.5hours to find ourselves down. People can go upto the temple in Jeep as well.

TIME: 10:30

Starting the Kodachadri trek

Like always people. I have divided the trek into 4 segments – makes it easier to know your milestones when you head out there (yes, u, gotta head out there!)

Segment Time Difficulty
Base to Hidlumane falls 20mins Easy
Hidlumane falls to Peak1 60mins Straining
Peak1 to Jeep Route 45mins Easy
Jeep route to Temple 15mins Easy
Temple to Peta (End) 30mins Easy but cautious

Kodachadri milestones

1. Base to Hidlumane Falls:

This was first stretch, it gives a pretty first good impression of the trek to come. Lots of streams and trees can be found. We made our way jumping with excitement and we came near a set of rocks, we had to cautiously proceed and make it across into the forest. And guess who greeted us? A snake! Wow, the day was getting better minute by minute, wanted to hold like always, but it crawled its way into a crevasse! After 20mins or so, we made it to mysterious Hidlumane falls. We decided to take a shower during our return to the place.

TIME: 11:00

Hidlumane Falls

2. Hidlumane Falls to Intermediate Peak:

Okay, this stretch would be the most grueling, energy consuming and risky part of the trek. As we left hidlumane we were still below the tree-line and no sunlight hit our heads directly. After a few minutes in the forest we were out in the open and the energy began to drain at a much faster rate. The terrain was steep, slippery with gravels and stones and not many resting points in between. It was a pure test of leg muscles. Pushing ourselves step by step (don’t forget the lunch and water bottles) we made on top of the intermediate peak – pretty much busted.

TIME: 12:00

The grueling steep climb

3. Intermediate Peak to Jeep Point:

After reaching the peak, we took rest for sometime and looked at the next stretch. We were happy to see a downward stretch followed by a climb again. Most of the trek was on flat lands and it was pretty easy. We made it to the intersection with the jeep route. This place is very scenic and offers very good views of the surrounding valleys and peaks.

TIME: 12:45

Jeep point views

4. Jeep Point to Temple:

This is a 1 to 1.5km walk on flat-ish muddy road. Considering the all climbing so far, it felt like heaven and we more or less put our bodies in neutral to take us further. The roads are with red mud and jeeps keep traversing. We did find a second snake here, but it was crushed under a vehicle. We reached the temple premises and there’s a pillar here whose metallic composition still remains mysterious to date. It is claimed that it blocks most of the cell tower signals.

TIME: 13:00

Mysterious iron pillar near temple

5. Temple to Peta:

This is the final stretch. People have to climb this stretch, until the last stretch people have an option of taking a Jeep until the temple. The final stretch was pretty good. It offered us very scenic views and it is said on a clear day we can spot the Arabian Sea from here. The path ran right along a steep ridge and it was slippery. So even though it was easy, high caution would be required. We made it to top and let out a huge breath from the bottom of our lungs.

TIME: 14:00

Final ridge climb

TOP OF KODACHADRI:

It is believed that Shakaracharya meditated here. We paid respect the place and quickly descended a few steps below to find a nice place to crash. We realized we don’t usually get to push our bodies to such limits, hence that jolting of ourselves is always required once in a while. We wiped out the slightest thoughts of heading back in jeep and decided to climb down on foot. We opened our packed lunches and began munching. After having a few bananas we decided to take a nap for some time and rejuvenate our body and mind.

TIME: 15:00

Meditation spot at the top

TREK DOWN:

After a good deep sleep, we felt so fresh waking up. We began our descent and it took us 2.5hrs (excluding the 1 hour at Hidlumane falls). We made it to temple in about 30mins and we started walking towards the jeep point. From the jeep point we made it to peak one enjoying the surroundings, the sun had begun his way down to the horizon as well.

Getting down the steep part from Peak 1 was kind of scary. It was taking a major toll on out knees and ankles. We did spot a herd of Bisons afar and also heard that once an elephant had made it until the temple. We reached Hidlumane falls by 5PM.

Even though the falls looked very pleasing, once we got below it, we could feel the force of the crushing water on top of our skulls. It was as though our skull was being ripped apart into two pieces gradually. Covering our heads and sides of ears we allowed the water to ease our pains. Once we emerged out, most of the pains had instantaneously disappeared.

Hidlumane Falls shower

Making our final way to the base, I was so excited I was jumping around the creek and boulders, I sprained my right ankle. But I knew incase I sat and held on it, it would cement. Hence bit my teeth hard and continued to jump on the boulders enduring the pain. And guess what, it became alright. Tried and test method – sprain your ankle? Just continue walking. It will self-heal. We reached back the base in one piece!

TIME: 18:00

So, that was day 2. Crazy day, we had flushed out bodies and minds by jolting it. Night we sat around the camp fire with glasses and snacks in our hand and had relaxing sleep post-dinner.

Evening at the campfire

DAY 3: Kavaledurga Trek – Mental People = Mental Plans

I was up by 5AM again and once Adi woke up, we went and got chess pieces and started playing chess ( off-late it had possessed me) After a good breakfast we decided to spend 2-3hours just exploring Simha Farms as it looked so artistic. We explored the farms, found it few other sculptures. And finally we hit the mother load when we found a canal running right inside their farm. And guess what, there were brilliant crocodile sculptures right near it that spooked us out haha!

Exploring Simha Farms

Now a big decision had to be made:

i) Get into cool waters and relax, finish lunch, sleep and again relax evening in the waters – Easy
ii) Get into waters and relax, have lunch and then head out to Kavaledurga
iii) Head out to Kavaledurga, Have lunch and return back and dive into waters – Tough

We actually spend 1hour unable to make decision. First option was scrapped as it looked too tempting – always suspicious. And we used a good old coin to make a decision and by 12PM we left to Kavaledurga.
TIME: 12:00

Heading to Kavaledurga

KAVALEDURGA TREK:

We reached Kavaledurga at about 1PM, our bodies still showed signs of fatigue owing to the Kodachadri trek. But this trek was pretty easy and took us only an hour to reach the top. Nonetheless considering the timing of our climb peak afternoon we were drained to the core. After about 30mins we found the palace laying ruins. This reminded of the Pink Floyd – Live in Pompiee concert. From the old palace the top is just 30mins away.

Kavaledurga Fort ruins

The view from the top was simply breath taking. We could spot a lot small ponds. But the final point is a small Shiva temple. People usually miss this as the awesome view of the lakes makes them feel that is they’re on top.

View from Kavaledurga peak

The trek down took us 45mins and we had a lot of coconut waters to re-hydrate ourselves considering the odd-hour of the trek. Once we were back to base, we drove to Nagara and had some special Fish curry lunch. And made it back to Simha Farms by 5PM and the cold flowing waters were simply inviting. And we dived right into it. WOW feeling!
TIME: 17:00

DAY 4: Drive back

The 4th day was especially reserved for drive back as it was a Sunday and we didn’t want to get stuck in the late evening traffic of Tumkur Road. We pulled over for breakfast at Shimoga at about 8:30AM and drove non-stop any guesses doing what? Listening to Danish Sait Prank calls hahhahah!
TIME:12:30

Driving back to Bangalore

CONCLUSION:

“Overall I must say this was an excellent chapter. It was like holding a plough and reaching to the bottom of your mind and removing all the existing dirt and residues. Major flushing. And pushing our bodies to know what it can handle was truly a rejuvenating experience. Thanks Adi, Arvi, and Mo.. I want Momz to re-collect the name of this place correctly next time we meet, only then I’ll thank him :P”

BR Hills: The Perfect 400km Cruise Mode Ride & Forest Range Nap | Chapter 161 (Aug 16, 2018)

BR Hills: Back to the Forest

Riders on the road with BR Hills visible in the distance

  • Place: BR Hills
  • Distance: 200 x 2 = 400kms
  • Directions: Bangalore > Channpatna > Malvalli > Kollegala > BR Hills
  • Krew: Chinmay (Big Show), Ashok (Momz), Datta (Dattu), Karthik (Sp)
  • Bikes: Enfield, Pulsar
  • Previous Visit: Channarayanadurga
  • Expense: Rs 800/head

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:

This had to be one of the few chapters where you are sure you would not be disappointed. The place itself, BR hills, is such a place, and the ride to it is just perfect. This visit was more of a catching up trip and we wanted to check out BR hills as it had been quite some time since we visited this beautiful location.

INTRO & PLAN:

It had been almost a month since our trek to Channarayanadurga. 2018 had been one of those years where we had just begun to settle down to 1 trip a month and go lazy. We shall make sure that 2019 would be different. A lot different!!

So, anyway BR hills of the Western Ghats famous for being the abode of Veerappan and few rides where you actually pass through dense forest. Chinmay, Momz, & Dattu were on the confirmed list.
TIME: 22:00 (12/12/2014)

Group of riders posing next to their bikes before starting the journey

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:

Yeah I was up by 4 AM, did a few push-ups and sit-ups, had a sip of coffee and was all set to go. The meet up was scheduled at Decathlon on Mysore road. Before that I picked up Dattu from his home and met others at Decathlon. After a formal greeting we decided to head out.
TIME: 07:15

RIDE 1: (Bangalore – Bidadi – Ramnagara – Channpatna – Kabbaldurga – Mallavali – Kollegala – BR hills)

This was 200kms, more or less cruising with a few planned breaks in between. We decided to take the Mysore road as we were sure of getting good breakfast. We cruised along peacefully alongside each other and pulled over at our regular hotel at Bidadi for some yummy breakfast.
TIME: 07:45

Motorcycles parked at the breakfast stop in Bidadi

During the breakfast Momz vividly described his dream last night, where he was a sage and was being chased by a tiger (*whose left hind leg was injured – the specificity, woo!!*) :P – crazy stories! Have to hear all this in person.

After a major laughing session, we left Bidadi and took a left deviation at Channpatna and proceeded towards Sathnur. In between we had a regular stop when we got the first glimpse of the mighty Kabbaladurga.
TIME: 09:00

After taking a small pit-stop (*oh wait we had a Javelin throw competition in between as well*) we left and re-joined the NH-209, Kanakpura road – Our snake way.

We picked up the pace as the temperatures had begun to rise. We rode non-stop, cruising past Shivanasamudra (Gagannachukki & Barachukki). We decided to skip these as of then and take a call during the ride back.

Funny part was, whenever I was seeing the rear view mirror. It almost seemed like Chinmay was riding solo (*even though Momz was sitting behind him :P*)

Bikers cruising along the open highway stretch

After reaching Kollegala, it was time to put my memory to rest and take the correct turns to reach BR hills. (No phones allowed) I was surprised I could remember most of the turns as each one had a memory attached to it. (*Momz blind curve, Zethu straight road etc.,*)

We had a one standard stop, from where the entire range of BR hills can be spotted, it is simply a magnificent place to stop and admire the beauty of these ranges. As we reached the foothills of the BR hills, we registered the bikes and spoke to the guards and were all set to enter the forest ranges.
TIME: 12:15

Panoramic view of the BR Hills forest range from a distance

BR HILLS:

We cruised at a slow pace inside Br hills, the air was fresh and oxygen rich I must say. The ride was peaceful. As it was a Monday there wasn’t much crowd as we took our time peacefully riding and trying to spot animals. The thing about these animals is, when you expect and go none turn up. When you go without expectation a herd of elephants would be walking around like cows haha. That's nature for you!

As we began to approach the stop we could feel the air cooling down and becoming so rich with a pleasant smell. We did remember the spot where we had witnessed the cremation ceremony of elephants back in 2014. We reached the top of BR hills.
TIME: 13:00

Bike parked on a winding road inside the BR Hills forest

TOP OF BR HILLS:

We spent about an hour on top as most of the temple was being renovated. We parked our bikes took off our shoes and visited the temple premises, paid respects to the place and found a sweet view point to crash at. We slept there for about 30mins or so and then decided to head back as our tummies had begun to growl!
TIME: 14:00

We decided to have a full meal lunch at the only hotel on top itself. I was a little hesitant to have lunch as I wasn’t feeling hungry. When the food was served, I guess I ate the most. Guess what would have happened if I was hungry? :P

Anyway, with tummies full, heads a little dizzy we decided to ride back as we avoid the peak hour traffic of the city.
TIME: 14:30

Motorcycles parked near the summit viewpoint at BR Hills

RIDE-2: (BR Hills > Kollegala > Malavalli > Kanakpura > Bangalore)

The ride back was smooth and steady. It had been a while since we had rode 400+kms in a day, hence this was actually a test and our bodies held on pretty well. We decided to take the Kanakpura road and reach back near college via the NICE road.

Momz decided to take over the handle from Chinmay and lead the way. But this time as we were behind, it looked as though Chinmay was riding the bike without using his hands :P Crazy combo those two are!

As we began to approach Bangalore, the traffic started becoming dense. By then we had reached the NICE entrance and cruised back towards college for a good sunset.
TIME: 18:00

Channarayanadurga Trek: Deceitful Fort Ruins & Dattu's Farewell Ride | Chapter 160 (Jul 1, 2018)

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:

This was another welcome back trek. It had been almost 4 years since we had visited this place and the first ascent of this hillock was very special back in 2012. Hence we decided to return back to her and give a special farewell to Dattu.

INTRO & PLAN:

Okay, as Dattu was moving to Hongkong we decided to give him a small farewell gift. With Deefu in town and Momz available we decided to have a small trek and end up at some dhaba nearby.
TIME: 22:00 (30/6/2018)

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:

Oh yeah woke up at 05:00, did a few push-ups & sit-ups, had a sip of coffee, woke up others & was all set to go! The meet up was scheduled at Dattu’s place at 07:00. So left my home at about 06:30AM,
Once I reached Dattu’s home, I was looking around if those cops were still around the place waiting to catch me, like always! Once the coast was clear, I called up Dattu and we began another epic wait. The wait lasted about 1hour, it had kind of became usual and this gave enough time for us to catch up. Once they arrived, we left Bangalore.
TIME: 08:00

RIDE 1: (Bangalore – Dobbaspete - Channarayandurga)

Ride to Channarayanadurga is 100kms pretty much all throughout lay butter smooth roads. First 50kms was on the NH-4, so we cruised along at comfortable pace. We were able to spot Shivagange standing in all her glory shrouded by early morning mist. We pulled over at our regular hotel to belt on some tasty idly & vada.
TIME: 08:45

We had a pretty heavy breakfast and grabbing on to our tea cups, we went outside. We caught up on each other’s lives and how it had progressed over past few months. After the chat, we hopped back on our bike and continued cruising on the Dobbaspete-Kortagere road. We enjoyed riding on the empty road. As we approached Channarayanadurga, we could see her standing in all her might.
TIME: 10:45

ASCENSION:

Channarayanadurga is one of those hillocks where the time should not be taken into consideration. There is so much to explore in this beautiful fort. The fort ruins and the deflection paths are something to watch out for and also appreciate. But nevertheless it took us about 1hour to ascend.
Anyway, I have divided the ascension into the following stages, and happy we didn’t feel much tired or fatigue, so yeah good indication. So, keep up with here! :
i) Initial Stretch
ii) Lost Paradise
iii) Layouts
iv) Last Strech
Once we parked our bikes near a bakery, requested the bakery guy to keep an eye out for our bikes. Left the helmets with them and waking the goat’s spirit within us, we were all set to conquer the hillock.
TIME: 10:45

i) Initial stretch:

This stretch is the hardest part of the trek. Not surprising at all right, if you want your enemies to die, let them die at the foot of the mountain not at the top. This stretch is not that steep, but quite tiring and you don’t find much of resting places in between. But pushing on through, we made through this stretch in about 20min.
TIME: 11:15

ii) Lost Paradise:

Once we reached the first fort wall, we spotted the right pathway which took us into the beautiful pond on the first tier of the hillock. From this layout one can spot the entire fort and the spot the top most tier of the fort as well. Here no matter how many times we visit this place, we just go on exploring the place like it was the first time. We visited the temple and after having a look inside, we went about the lake and begin our way up.
TIME: 11:45

iii) Layouts:

Last time we visited this place, we had majorly goofed up at this place. But this time, we made sure we take the right pathway and made to the “End of the World” spot. We could see Madhugiri standing afar. Sometime soon I said to myself and let it go. We spend quite some time here taking photographs.

iii) Last Stretch:

There are two pathways to reach the top. One goes through the normal way and the other you would have to crawl through shrubs and thorns. But the shrubs path was completely thick this time, there was no space to even get in. If we had tried to get in, consider us pretty much done for haha. We took the normal path and reached the top of the hillock.
TIME: 12:00

TOP:

As we reached the top, we settled down below some tree and began to relax. I opened my chocolate pouch and began distributing. Munching on some treats, we began talking about school and incidents which usually cracks us up till date. After which, we decided to take a power nap for about 20-30mins. Waking up, we let out a big yawn and decided to head back down.
TIME: 13:00

TREK BACK:

It took us only about an hour to get back to base. But ah, I guess we wasted a lot of time during our way down having fun. As we began our descent, we explored the ruin buildings on the other side of the hillock. It was spooky and exciting. As we made our way down, Momz and Deefu spotted a huge boulder afar and decided to climb it. Dattu and me took a pass and sat down on the inclined surface seeing the fun. We made it back to base, collected the helmets and thanked the shopkeeper for looking after our bikes. As we were just about leave, a flock of sheep came storming on the road and we had just sit and watch them pass for the next 15-20mins. And oh yeah, in between some donkey was stuck and it was moving along with the crowd not able to figure out where it was heading to :D
TIME: 14:00

RIDE 2: (Channarayandurga – Chandu Dhaba – Bangalore)

Okay this was the 100kms ride back to Bangalore. As we left Channarayanadurga, the cool breeze felt good on our face. As we proceeded, we picked up speed post Kortagere and went full zoom towards the highway. After reaching the highway went straight to Chandu Dhaba for some food & drinks.
TIME: 16:00
We spent a good 1hour or so at the dhaba munching & drinking after which we rode back to reach our respective homes.
TIME: 18:00

CONCLUSION:

People usually say, we have been to that place already, let’s try something new. But different seasons, different people, and different mind-sets make the place seem new all the time. Last time we visited this place it was the same crew, yet this trip felt so different!
Until next time Ta-ta Cia \m/
