Ratnagiri Fort Trek: Freestyling Leopard Adventure | Chapter 202 (May 25, 2024)

Madhu on the 2nd fort wall at Ratnagiri
  • Place: Ratnagiri Fort Trek
  • Distance: 150kms x 2 = 300kms
  • Directions: Bangalore > Dobbaspete > Madhugiri > Ratnagiri Fort
  • Krew: Madhu, Karthik (Sp)
  • Bikes: Pulsar
  • Previous Visit: Bhairavadurga
  • Budget: Rs 500/head

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:

Another simple trek to the mystery fort of Ratnagiri. The route and gateways can be confusing but fun. This was Madhu's first time joining, so we kept it simple and stuck to our proven process.

INTRO & PLAN:

Two weeks after the rattling Bhairavadurga trek, Madhu expressed interest in joining the next one. I was more excited than him! With the destination unknown but the plan clear, we decided to head out over the weekend.

TIME: 11:00 (22/5/2024)

Hiker at the starting point of the Ratnagiri trek

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:

Woke up by 3:30 am, did a few stretches, and called Madhu. He arrived at my home by 5:15 am—a happy surprise! We took off immediately; every minute before sunrise is precious.

TIME: 05:15

RIDE 1: (Bangalore – Dobbaspete – Madhugiri – Ratnagiri Fort)

The ride began smoothly in the dark chill. As the sky opened up, the temperature took a sharp dip. We pulled over at Dobbaspete at 6:15 am for a hot tea stop after covering 50km.

Hiker's breakfast en route ratnagiri fort

After tea, we found the old couple we discovered last time. They serve the best roadside idly, vada, and pulao—a super heavy and worth-it breakfast. We continued for 40km until Ratnagiri appeared afar. The ride through town felt like stepping into history.

TIME: 08:30

RATNAGIRI FORT TREK:

The ascent took about an hour. An eerie silence hit us—with no one else around, the silence felt dense. The trek consists of three distinct stages:

  1. Way to the Door
  2. Amazing Mid-Riff
  3. The Last Stairs

i) Way to the Door:

The initial stretch is tricky. You have to scan the hillock for a small door in the wall and figure out your own path to it. Every hiker chooses a different route, but the goal remains the same.

TIME: 08:45

ii) Amazing Mid-Riff:

After entering, a clear stony path appears. The fort walls, shrouded in creepers, gave us chills. We kept our senses on high alert, relishing the eerie atmosphere.

TIME: 09:00

iii) Last Stairs:

We explored several granaries—Madhu noted they looked like fruit-ripening stores. From there, it was a simple climb up the last stairs to the summit.

TIME: 09:15

TOP:

The wind speed picked up at the top. We played with helicopter seeds under calm skies. After enjoying the 360-degree views and finding a crumbling wall where the wind gushed through, we crashed in our usual cave spot.

TIME: 09:30

TREK DOWN:

After a 20-minute nap, we headed down. The descent took 30 minutes. We had fun descending rock faces instead of stairs as a practice for future treks. We reached the bikes and bid farewell to beautiful Ratnagiri.

TIME: 10:45

RIDE 2: (Ratnagiri Fort – Medigeshi – Madhugiri - Dobbaspete – Bangalore)

The ride back was hot. We reached Madhugiri in 45 minutes for a stretch. After witnessing a sobering accident on the road, we kept our composure and glided into Whity Dhaba for a heavy lunch.

A well deserved lunch post the trek

After lunch, we hit the NICE road. A final coffee at my place before Madhu headed home across the city.

TIME: 16:00

Great and smooth trip. Until next time, Cia \m/

Bhairavadurga Fort Trek: Conquering the Craziest Navadurga | Chapter 201 (May 11, 2024)

Koof on the summit of Bharavadurga with Shivagange seen in the background
  • Place: Bhairavadurga trek
  • Distance: 60kms x 2 = 120kms
  • Directions: Bangalore > Nelamangala > Solur > Bhairavadurga
  • Krew: Dilip (Koof), Karthik (Sp)
  • Bikes: Pulsar
  • Previous Visit: Huthridurga trek
  • Budget: Rs 250/head

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:

Wow, this was a fantastic trek to the craziest of Navadurgas – Bhairavadurga. The climb is steep and challenging. A few stretches are risky, but without risk, it's not fun! A kickass trek we enjoyed thoroughly.

INTRO & PLAN:

A week after returning from Nashik, I was ready. We initially planned for Madhugiri, but Koof had a hectic week and wanted something closer. Late at night, we chose the hillock that sends shivers down the spine: Bhairavadurga.

TIME: 22:00 (10/5/2024)

Hiker climbing the steep rock face of Bhairavadurga

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:

Awake by 3 am, sipped coffee, and ready to go. I picked up Koof at 5:30 am. We hit a roadside idly stall near the DVG petrol bunk—it opens at 3:30 am and closes by 6:30 am. The food was decent and the place was crowded, but it fueled us for the day.

TIME: 06:30

Idly vada, the standard hiker breakfast

RIDE 1: (Bangalore – Nelamangala – Solur - Bhairavadurga)

A smooth 60 km ride until Nelamangala, where we hit a massive traffic jam due to a rain-damaged road patch. Once past the jam, we bypassed Google Maps, asked locals for directions after Solur, and reached the base. We left our bikes and helmets with the locals and started the trek.

TIME: 08:00

Hiker navigating the initial stretch of Bhairavadurga

BHAIRAVADURGA TREK

This is a challenging ascent. We took about 60 minutes to climb. The trek is divided into three distinct phases:

  1. Initial Forest
  2. Steep Climb
  3. Final Ascent
Hiker navigating the burnt thickets in the kuduru forest

i) Initial Forest:

It’s easy to get lost here. We used the hilltop water flow signs as an anchor. The forest was eerily silent, filled only with peacock calls and insect chirps. Wading through dried grass, we reached the rock phase in 15 minutes.

TIME: 08:15

Hiker climbing up the steepest part of bhairavadurga

ii) Steep Ascent:

This is where the skill comes in. The rock is steep but grippy. We navigated cracks and moved inch by inch. The "crazy ascent" part is nearly vertical, requiring double caution. We pushed through and reached the fort wall.

TIME: 09:00

Sippy resting just before the final stretch to the summit

iii) Final Ascent:

After a short rest at the fort wall, the final stretch was a step-by-step push. It was challenging but less risky than the vertical rock phase. We reached the summit in 15 minutes.

TIME: 09:15

Koof hiking up the stone wall of bhairavadurga

TOP:

We spent 45 minutes at the summit. It was windy and uplifting; we actually dozed off for 30 minutes while cloud-watching. After some water and chocolates, we started the descent, still buzzing from the challenging climb.

TIME: 10:15

hiker descending via the forest route at bhairavadurga

DESCENSION:

The trek back took about 40 minutes. With the grass burnt out, finding the forest route was much easier. We plucked a few mangoes on the way and navigated back to the bikes.

TIME: 10:45

koof resting in between stretches on the rock face of bhairavadurga

RIDE 2: (Kuddur – Solur – Nelamangala – Bangalore)

The ride back was simple. We've started a tradition of having a "Sting" energy drink post-trek for that extra rush. Madhu joined us for a quick "sitting" in RR Nagar before we finally headed home.

TIME: 12:15
