IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:

An amazing fort trek to an ancient Vijayanagara dynasty site in Andhra Pradesh. Well-preserved and full of unexpected exploration, it’s a hidden gem that today’s trekkers rarely visit. A great third trip for January 2017!

INTRO & PLAN:

It was 4 days since our wonderful visit to Ratnagiri Fort and Medigeshi. I decided to get Madakasira "in the bag" for the Republic Day holiday. Gowrish was confirmed. TIME: 13:00 (25/1/2017)

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:

Woke up at 04:00, did some prep, and met Gowrish at 06:30. We left his "Desert Storm" behind and took my Pulsar to beat the traffic. TIME: 07:00

RIDE 1: Bangalore to Madakasira

A cold, foggy 150km ride. We passed several geared-up biking groups and stopped for a quick breakfast at our usual spot at 07:30. The fog was so thick the hills were invisible.

Beyond Madhugiri, we crossed the AP border. We navigated narrow lanes, parked the bike, and left our helmets with a kind local lady. TIME: 10:30

MADAKASIRA FORT TREK:

The climb takes about an hour and is split into three distinct stages:

i) Initial Climb (The Stairs)

A steep stair climb alongside the fort walls. As you ascend, the town shrinks below and the beauty of the Vijayanagara architecture reveals itself through several stone gateways.

ii) The Brown Fortress (The Maze)

A massive, well-preserved core with misleading paths and a hidden temple. It feels like a maze designed to confuse invaders—and it definitely worked on us!

iii) The Bell Stretch (The Peak)

The final, crude hillock. No more steps here—just raw rock. We used some light rock-climbing moves to get past two tricky spots before reaching the cave that leads to the summit. TIME: 12:00

THE SUMMIT:

We rang the summit bell thrice. A cool drizzle started as we sat in the Mantapa, enjoying the stillness for 45 minutes. TIME: 12:45

TREK DOWN & RETURN:

The descent was slippery due to the rain. I had one minor slip-and-slide on a steep section, but we made it down in 30 minutes. After picking up our helmets, we rode back, stopping by a beautiful lake and grabbing a late lunch at Chandu Dhaba in Nelamangala. Back home by 17:30.

CONCLUSION:

"Overwhelmed by how amazing this trek was. A ruthless and awesome start to 2017!"
